Protesters clash with police across Brazil as civil unrest roils across country
Protesters in several major cities in Brazil are up in arms over hikes in mass transit prices — from $1.5 to $1.6 — as well as over the $15 billion earmarked for the two sports events amid calls for more health and education funding. After a march against higher public transportation fares and the use of public funds to finance international football tournaments on June 17, 2013, the protests turned violent and clashes with the police ensued.

Bloomberg plans to get New Yorkers composting
We recently learned that 100 New York City restaurants would be participating in a food waste composting program. Now, The New York Times reports that Mayor Bloomberg, who in February called food waste “New York City’s final recycling frontier”, will soon announce a new composting plan that aims to divert 100,000 tons of food scraps from landfills each year and become mandatory city-wide by 2016.
